1. In a journal entry of 1849, Kierkegaard refers to the various “Notes” he had written about his authorship as well as to the Point of View, writing that “everything of this nature shall be finished as it is until after my death” (referenced in PVL, 160). See also Walter Lowrie, A Short Life of Kierkegaard (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1965), p. 211: “[Kierkegaard] had expected to die soon after [The Point of View] was finished, and so to leave it for posthumous publication.” And Joakim Garff, Søren Kierkegaard: A Biography, trans. Bruce Kirmmse (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2005), p. 560: “The Point of View was consigned [by Kierkegaard] to posthumous publication, which was seen to by Peter Christian Kierkegaard.”

I have chosen to use translations by Walter Lowrie and David and Lilian Swenson over the more recent editions of Howard and Edna Hong in gratitude for their friendship with my father, Fred Berthold, who introduced me to Kierkegaard through the translations of his friends more than forty years ago.
