A boulder placed strategically at the bottom but slightly to one side of the sheet of water creates a spectacular cascade effect, which adds further interest and power to this waterfall.

A pool fed by a cascade is an ideal spot for a sheltered bench. A wisteria pergola could be constructed instead, for it will have a cool canopy of light green leaves during the summer and earlier in the year it will be hung with clusters of blossom. Shades of purple look particularly striking when seen against a backdrop of green. They are very beautiful near water if used with restraint as they are here in the Honda Tea Garden designed by J. Dowle and K. Ninomiya for the Chelsea Flower Show in 1995 (the same garden is pictured on page 4). Various paths allow the garden to be seen from different perspectives.
