Juan next decided to hold an offsite working session to allow the team to get away from their day-to-day activities to focus on the task at hand. The team reviewed the new strategic plan and findings from the scalability life cycle and capacity assessments that Juan and the senior leadership team had completed months earlier. The team then brainstormed on the criteria that would be used to score the proposed programs. This resulted in a list of twelve screening criteria. Staying with the theme of “focus,” Juan challenged the team to go back and prioritize the list. The team identified the top six criteria.

Strategic alignment: To what extent does the program impact the strategic plan goals?

Benchmarks/Performance indicators: How does the program advance or scale the impact and outcomes of our work?

•

Stakeholders: How involved are our stakeholders in delivering or benefiting from the targeted solutions?

•

Technology: Do we have the technology and systems in place to successfully implement the program?

•

Operations: To what extent does the program advance the organization’s capability in scaling outcomes?

•

Risks: What is the magnitude of the risk (internal and external) for pursuing the program?

The team quickly realized that not all the criteria were equally important, so they weighted each criterion on a scale.
