They’ve tidied her room and washed the dishes. The rest will fall on me. Maybe I could wake Ilana, ask for help, but then I wouldn’t have something to be bitter about, later, strikes on an unseen scoreboard.

The towels and tablecloth go in the washing machine. Sheets seem like too much effort—we’ve been here under a week, who will know? The vacuum bag fills up with sand after a minute and I don’t know where the extras are kept, so I just sweep and shake out the mats. I spray stain remover on the couches, but I don’t wipe it off in time and it only makes them look worse. I put all the dishes back, even the ones we have chipped.

Ilana is terse when she rises. I know how she’s feeling: like I’ve seen her naked. That sleepwalking, that was Ilana’s naked.

I decide to be kind to her, sand down the edges.

—Hey, I say, —there’s no rush. I’ll make coffee and you have breakfast. I’m going for one last swim. There’s no point leaving too early, the recycling drop-off won’t be open.

I know full well that it is.
