7.2 Normal Anatomy

Multislice computed tomography (CT), for its enhanced spatial resolution, is more precise than the magnetic resonance imaging for an accurate study of the complex anatomy of the peritoneal cavity, whose knowledge is the key for the interpretation of the several diseases that may interest the structure of this region of the body.

The study of the peritoneum, in normal condition, depends on the morphology of the patient: the amount of adipose tissue (lacking in thin adults and children) is the main contrast factor for the identification of peritoneal structures; in pathological conditions, the presence of ascites increases the contrast and allows to better highlight the layers, ligaments and peritoneal recesses.

In view of the above, the most important peritoneal layers or ligaments that can be displayed in the abdominal cavity through CT imaging are the following:Greater omentum, consisting of the gastrocolic ligament and the transverse mesocolon (Fig. 7.4)
