By curving north toward the sun, the halfmens ensure that their short-lived leaves and developing flowers get as much of the winter light as possible. The sunshine also makes their flowers more visible to pollinators, increasing their chance of producing seeds. When spring comes, halfmens drop their leaves to prevent scorching.

Another, more melancholy explanation for why the halfmens face north is found in the stories of the Nama people, nomadic herders who live in and help manage the Richtersveld. According to their oral histories, they once lived in more verdant parts of Namibia, to the north, but were driven out by conflicts with other groups. Upon crossing into this new and difficult desert, some paused to look back. The pitying gods transformed them into halfmens—looking north to their old homeland, rooted in their new one. > How to see them: Well-known populations are found in |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, as well as the greater Richtersveld area on the Atlantic Coast in South Africa.
