Asia grunted as she pushed off the ground for the tenth pushup.

“You’ve done enough for now.” Luke, the doctor who had cared for her day in day out, applauded. “You’re getting stronger by the day. I know you want to get well and strong sooner, but I’m worried about your injuries. We want them healed properly.”

She dusted her hands off and hid her wince at the sharp pain slicing her left side. She was pushing herself beyond her limit for a reason. “I’ll soon be healed enough to reach my goal.” She strode over to the window and studied the cityscape, her eyes falling irresistibly on the part of town where her family had been murdered, leading her throat to tighten. It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t been a cop, they wouldn’t have died. I can’t let it go, Lord Jesus. I cannot. “Just get me well enough to get back out there.”

In his reflection on the glass, Luke shook his head. “No, you won’t. Listen, Asia, I didn’t save your life so you could put it back in danger. You need to let go and move on.”

She spun so fast that he blinked and stepped back. “Luke, I’m alive for one reason and one reason only—to put the man who put my family in the grave, six feet under. He must pay for killing my family.”

“Vengeance belongs to God.” He drew up closer, his hands clenching.

She pinned her arms on her hurting sides. “I don’t think Carlos Saint Magna ever heard that before.”

He curled his arms. “You have. And you can’t go back out there seeking revenge, without backup and with no record of still being alive. Your fellow cops think you’re dead.” Concern softened his features, loosening his clenched fists. “I won’t let that happen. I won’t let you commit murder, even if the man deserves to die for killing your family, Asia. You have an equal right to revenge as you do to forgiveness. Your choice makes the difference.”

She grabbed a fifteen-pound dumbbell and staggered her pose, fierceness rising within her heart at the memory of her son’s last scream and the reverberating shots that took Jeremiah and Jared from her. “Let’s get to the next workout.”

She wasn’t going to put Luke in danger. No. She would get better.

Then she would doubtless take revenge for her family and take down that devil-of-a-man alone, writing her own “The End” over his.
