Don’t get stuck with a dud.

Last spring I bought a Japanese maple expecting that it would put on a beautiful color display in fall. Instead, the leaves turned brown in fall—no color at all. The other trees in the neighborhood put on magnificent shows. What’s going on?

When it comes to trees with great fall color, “Some what’s got it, some what’s ain’t!” I bought two vine maples one spring a while ago. I planted them across from one another in almost the exact same conditions. Every fall, one of the trees puts on an incredible show, displaying every color in the rainbow. The other is a dud: The leaves inevitably turn an ugly brown and fall from the tree. The only way to be sure you will get a great show is to buy your tree in fall. Choose the one with the best fall color of its type in the nursery. Then your new tree will likely be one “what’s got it,” one that will put on a gorgeous display every autumn.
