Chapter Eleven

Ambrosia opened her eyes and had no idea where she was.

She lay on her back. Above her, a natural-wood ceiling fan twirled. Sunlight bathed her from the window a few inches from her arm. She lay on the thick cushion of a bed-sized window seat, glass panels at her feet, to her left, and behind her pillow. A floral-scented breeze drifted in through the raised panes and the rush of water reached her ears. Not a hundred feet from the window, a waterfall streamed over a cliff.

“Don’t sit up too fast.” A heavy hand came to rest on her shoulder from behind.

“Reece? What happened?”

“You passed out.” He stepped into her line of vision and sat near her knees.

She rubbed her forehead. “I’ve never passed out in my life.”

“You just did.”

“For how long?”

“Just a few minutes. Here.” He picked up two pillows from the floor and helped her into a sitting position. “Feel all right?”

“Yeah.”

“I’ll get you some water.”

He headed across the room—a large bedroom with a king-size, four-post bed covered in chocolate-brown blankets—and disappeared into an attached bath. The walls, brown-stained concrete, suggested ultramodern architecture as opposed to something more traditional for the region.

A woman yelled from elsewhere in the house. “Reece?”

He emerged from the bathroom, a glass of water in hand, and leaned out an open door into a hall. “We’re up here.”

Ambrosia accepted the water and sipped. “Who was that?”

“Celeste, my youngest sister—”

Before he could finish, a woman with skin even darker than Reece’s strode into the room, the long skirt of her sky-blue, silk sundress swirling about her ankles. A matching blue ribbon snaked through her French-braided hair, which fell to her waist. Her eyes, just as blue, narrowed, scrutinizing.

Ambrosia forced a smile. One of Reece’s sisters? Why meet her right now? She murmured to Reece, “I still feel a little light-headed.”

“That’s why Celeste is here. She’s the family healer. Cel, this is Ambrosia.”

Celeste crossed the room, carrying a large leather bag. “I’m a doctor. I’ve been through medical school. Twice. Once in the eighteen hundreds. Once just a decade ago. And yet, he calls me a ‘healer,’ a term we used when he was young. Do you have a brother, Ambrosia?”

“Uh, no. Just a sister.”

“Lucky you.”

Reece cleared his throat.

Hmm, maybe his family wasn’t so bad, after all.

Celeste took out a stethoscope, went through a basic exam, and asked questions about Ambrosia’s medical history. “You’ve had some excitement, huh? He just recently revealed the existence of phoenixes to you?”

“Yes. Excitement is one word. Insanity is another.”

“Indeed. You’ve been under an incredible amount of stress. This looks like a simple low-blood-pressure incident.”

“Is the baby all right?”

Celeste froze. “Baby?”

“I’m pregnant.” She glanced at Reece, who stood with his arms tightly folded and back to Celeste. “Sorry. I thought he would have told you while I was out.”

The two phoenixes stared at each other.

“It was an accident,” Reece ground out.

“I should hope so,” Celeste said, her voice clipped.

Ambrosia wrapped her arms around her middle. “Um, I’m still here.”

Celeste turned back to her.
