WHAT ROLE DOES music have in our school community? To consider this question, one must ask, where does music live within children, within each person in the community? As a music teacher, I’m a weaver of a web, bringing out the music that already exists in the students’ heads, in the experiences and hands of their family and ancestors, and on the radio and Internet. I play with schoolyard jump rope rhymes and the DJ mix shortcuts that the older students whiz through on the computer. I introduce music that my students do not yet know. I teach, discover, champion, and make music together with my students, their families, and our faculty and staff. What potential expression of musicality and movement is now in my students’ heads and hands? To understand, let’s take a tour of my school. After the tour I will describe some of the reasons why we should integrate music across the curriculum and how student learning benefits. I conclude with examples of music integration from my own school, where all teachers are committed to practicing the arts as an expression of learning and identity and a means of reflection.
