If you work from more softly-lit pose photos, such as the two here (from PoseSpace.com), it will take you less time and effort to do the exercise. As you can see, a great alternative to the female figure is a male model with a muscular “butterfly-shape” bum.

When you have more experience, you can progress to bigger and/or more detailed renderings in this technique.

In this picture, of a figure reclining in deep space, you can find another advantage to this exercise; it can teach you to render credible foreshortening. I suggest, though, that you avoid broad or stretched-out poses while learning this technique and stick to compact poses such as the one I did here.

This was a skill-training exercise. After doing a few versions of it, you can move on and apply your new understanding to regular drawings.

Although the preceding exercise is rudimentary, the worth of pose photos is not at all limited to beginners. All of us need practice, no matter how experienced we might be. Without life-long rehearsal, the best of skills will eventually wane. Plus, artists of all proficiency levels can find enjoyment in the mere indulgence of drawing as an end in itself.
