KEITH LO BUE

Secret Garden

Describing his studio as a cul-de-sac, in which endless paths and impulses converge, Keith Lo Bue thrives on the notion of terra incognita, where anything is possible. His joy is in working with entirely diverse objects, such as the wooden and steel shoe trees that play a pivotal role in this regal wearable sculpture.

Taking care that each element becomes part of a coherent entity, he begins conceptualizing, as the piece evolves on his worktable. By working in this organic way, Keith explains, he avoids forcing objects (however magical) to play roles for which they are unsuited. He considers himself a conductor, helping each of the proposed elements lend its voice to a chorus that builds into a finished work.

“One of the joys of working with such diverse materials is that objects can emerge from simply anywhere, often from very unexpected places,” says Keith. “The major components of my work were found while traveling.”
