Please have your notebooks and pens ready. Today we will consider our sense of movement and anticipation.

STEPS

Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes. From your memory, recall a specific, familiar object rolling.

Consider the context, the environment. We’ll sit in silence for about three minutes to contemplate. Be as specific as possible about the features of the object, the environment it is in, and the surface it is rolling on. How specific can you be?

Consider all of the sensory qualities and context that affect the rolling affair—sonic, kinesthetic, tactile, visual. What is the weather like? Is the ground smooth or rough or slanted? And so on.

After one to three minutes of focused contemplation, open your eyes. Please jot down and/or draw in your journal your observations.

Discuss. To leader: I often ask someone to lead our discussion each session, to call on participants and move the discussion along. I tell them that “leading” in our case means allowing others to speak without too much guidance or prompting at first. Opening a group talk can be as simple as “Any thoughts?” or “What thoughts arose?” Once everyone has spoken or the discussion comes to a natural close, adding a few questions or prompts can help move the discussion ahead. Questions for follow-up can include these:

Did you imagine watching or hearing the object roll?

Was it difficult for you to visualize the rolling scene?

What was the nature of the roll?

If you imagined movement, did it convey information about enactive knowledge and the object, even though the scene was one that was imagined?

Did the rolling make sound?

Did the surface texture of the object affect the roll?

What color and shape was the object?
