Chapter 10

No news is good news

His roommate stared at him like he was a visitor from outer space when he finally made it back home. “Dude,” he called out as Seth entered the living room where he was watching TV, “you OK?” He slumped down at the other end of the couch and replied, “Yeah, I’m fine. Crazy day.” “I’ll bet,” he shot back, a look of excitement on his face as he prepared to get all the details of his friend’s first time in jail. They talked for quite a while, and Seth gave him all the details of finding Christie, then getting arrested and grilled for 24 hours. He could tell he was Billy’s new hero.

He tried to watch the news for a while, but the story about Christie seemed to be on every channel. Most of them had the basic details, but then each station would show Seth’s picture as the man police had in custody. They probably didn’t even know he had been released. Innocent or not, now everyone out there would see him as a suspect. Could he even show his face in public anymore, at work or at church? He would have to call his boss and ask for more time off. He needed a few days to get over this latest drama, and Winter’s killer was still out there somewhere. At least this time he had been able to save Christie. Maybe if he stayed close to the Spirit he could actually catch this guy. Either way he prayed that this would all be over soon.

The rest of the week was fairly uneventful. He enjoyed his time off from work and stayed in the house most of the time. He spent some time at his parents’ house, taking comfort in knowing that his family still supported him. He had received a few calls from the bishopric of the singles ward, asking if he needed anything in the way of spiritual support. He had thanked them and asked for their prayers on his behalf. He only watched the news a little each morning, mostly to find out if Christie had awakened from her coma. So far she was still unresponsive, and he hoped that she would pull out of it soon. There was also no news of any new abductions, and he had not had any nightmares all week. That was good news at least, but he doubted that the killer was done. He was probably just working on a new plan.

As the week ended, Seth was faced with the difficult choice of whether to go to church or not. He wondered if he could bear the looks people would give him, like he was some science experiment to be studied. How could he teach them with all of their eyes watching his every move? At the same time, he needed the Spirit to be close to him more than ever. He needed to be there, to take the sacrament and be uplifted. He realized he had to go to church if he wanted to catch a killer.
