GOD
“God is the eschatological hope.”
Theologians have employed this statement ever since the nineteenth century to describe the deity who, according to traditional monotheistic religions, will bring about Armageddon. God is the force behind Armageddon. God is predicted to be the final victor of the battle. The war between God and the devil is what first prompted the term Armageddon to be used (see Armageddon). A climactic battle between good and evil was the principal theological reason-for-being of the world’s first monotheistic religion (see Zoroastrianism). In other words, without a conception of an Armageddon, monotheism might not even have arisen.
But who, or what, is God?
Most human beings define God by using one of five conceptual categories. Each of these categories pictures a God who has a distinctly different role to play in bringing about the end of the world. One’s conception of divinity determines one’s view of how the world will end. It is revealing to see how different these conceptions can be.
