Most people will have answered yes to one, maybe two of these questions, but if you found yourself nodding as you went down the list it probably means that you favour this kind of dance. In therapy, people who are ‘over-committed’ discover that they were more attached to a fantasy version of their beloved than the real person they dated. This was certainly the case for Mia whose beloved was already involved with somebody else: ‘I didn’t really love him, but what I thought he could be.’ In effect, she had been projecting her dreams on to him. Once she realised that she had been mourning not for what she had lost but for some fantasy of how it might have been, she found it easier to move on.
