Invincible ignorance is an important concept in Roman Catholic theology, particularly with respect to the relationship of Protestants to the Roman community. Invincible ignorance is ignorance that cannot be overcome, therefore providing an excuse (as distinguished from vincible ignorance, which can be and should be conquered, and therefore provides no excuse). In Romans 1:20, Paul says men are “without excuse” because God’s general revelation of Himself is so clear. At judgment day, no one will be able to claim to have no knowledge of God and plead invincible ignorance. They may plead ignorance, but it will be vincible ignorance, which will render them inexcusable.
