At the end of stitching, leave about a 5" (13cm) tail on both the top and bobbin threads. Pull the bobbin thread tails through to the back side with a chenille or tapestry needle. Tie in knots. Secure with a small amount of permanent fabric glue.

Couching

Couching is a technique used to add yarn or very thick threads to an appliqué or background. For machine couching, a zigzag stitch, other programmed stitch, or free-motion stitching is used to secure a yarn or larger thread to the piece.

Setup for Stitching

• For zigzag and decorative stitches, use an open-toe embroidery or appliqué presser foot. Or, use a braiding or cording foot to help guide the heavy thread.

• Use invisible monofilament thread, a matching thread, or a contrasting or decorative thread to show off decorative stitches.

• Make a sample to test various stitches and threads. Try standard zigzag, blind hem, serpentine, and various decorative satin stitches.
