3 KDD Cup’99 and History

In 1998 and 1999, the Lincoln Laboratory under the sponsorship of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology generated standard network traffic data to review and access research activities in the field of network intrusion detection [13]. An environment was set up to acquire a TCP/IP dump in a LAN with multiple attacks having 4,898,431 traffic data records out of which 3,925,650 were attacks only [8]. Further, a special interested group of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) named Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) organized the annual data mining and discovery competition for year 1999 called KDD Cup’99 focused on computer network intrusion detection area; this KDD Cup’99 dataset is freely available for researchers and designers of IDS. This is a benchmark dataset on which different methodologies are evaluated.

The overall KDD Cup’99 dataset has been categorized into three basic components of the KDD Cup’99 dataset Lippmann, et al. [16].1.10% KDD Labeled Training Dataset—This part of KDD Cup’99 is considered as training data and contains 97278 normal records out of total 494021 records.
