Gabriel released her throat and threw his head back on a groan. “Ah, Fate,” he rasped. He increased the speed and angle of his thrusts, pressing her buttocks and the small of her back down against the tiled floor of the shower. Her next climax came fast. She released his throat and cried out as they both came together.

He wrapped her in his arms and rocked her back and forth as they enjoyed the rush of the blood through their veins and the afterglow of their joining.

Fate Embraced That was the headline of the newspaper that Adam put on the table in front of Fate that afternoon. “Isn’t that clever,” she commented with a sour twist to her mouth.

“Like I haven’t been enduring puns on my name since I was five.” She picked up her coffee and took a sip as she read through the article.

She’d come downstairs after showering with Gabriel-and they really had showered, eventually-to find the house filled with Embraced. Adam, of course, was still there. Charlie had returned with Niccolo and they’d brought a friend.

Mihail was a fully Embraced who had an intriguing Slavic-sounding accent she couldn’t place. She was too afraid to ask him where he was from because the man was even more intimidating than Niccolo. He’d spent a full five minutes sitting on the couch with a scowl on his face and staring at her an ice-blue gaze that gave her chills. The man was just disturbing. Finally, she’d turned he r b ack on him and started reading the newspaper.

Hot, consuming wisps of anger curled through her by the time she reached the end of the article. They’d spotlighted her life, her family, her personal history, her art-everything that made her who she was. They’d done it without asking her permission and had laid her open for all to see. It was as if, like her attacker, they’d stolen a piece of her.

She wanted some semblance of her life back, which meant not cowering in Gabriel’s house. She needed to reclaim normalcy. Well, as normal as she could get on a steady diet of hot blood.

In order to regain normalcy, she needed to find out who’d attacked her. She needed closure. She’d tried to get Gabriel to let her to go with him when he investigated the various leads he had, but he never allowed it. He said she was not strong enough yet to defend herself if it came down to that.

She hated that he was probably right, since she was tired all the time.

Although it still pissed her off that he thought she wouldn’t be able to handle herself if it came to that. She was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, goddamn it! That hadn’t changed when she’d become Vampir. It made her angry to feel so vulnerable. After all, she’d spent years studying Tae Kwon Do simply so she would never feel exposed and defenseless. Now all she seemed to feel was exposed and vulnerable.
