Does my behaviour in respect of love effect nothing? That is because there is not enough love in me. . . . Is my love of peace misunderstod and scorned? That means that I am not yet sufficiently peace-loving.6

He looked up from his manuscript and glanced outside the window. The rain had stopped, and a single ray of light beamed down from the gray sky. He turned to his manuscript once more: “No ray of sunlight is ever lost, but the green which it wakes into existence needs time to sprout, and it is not always granted to the sower to live to see the harvest. All work that is worth anything is done in faith.”7

“Father,” a small voice danced into the room.

“Yes, Rhena?” He laid down his pen and lifted his daughter onto his lap. “You’re getting so big! I almost can’t believe you are already five!”

“We had our birthdays on the same day, Father, you remember.”

“Yes,” he said with a laugh, “so we did, just a few weeks ago.” His thoughts turned back the pages of the last few years, watching a darling baby grow into an even more darling child. He flipped forward to unwritten pages, where he would be waving good-bye, unsure of when he would see her again. He prayed it would not be long.

Rhena smiled and hopped down, running off to play, leaving Schweitzer once more with his thoughts. He thought of the world in which his daughter would grow up. In a world that seemed to be growing crueler than ever before, his concern was not only for her but for the future of mankind. He paused pensively, then took up his pen once more and continued writing:
