94. See Carlin, “Pro Life.” Note: it’s pretty sweary, like most of Carlin’s work.

99. I have been avoiding the term “animal rights” and use it here as it was used in the context of my discussions with Sider. For more on animal rights versus animal welfare, see the glossary. I don’t use “animal rights” primarily because I am not convinced that scripture affords “rights” (as we understand them in our present historical context) to anyone. The language of “rights” is loaded with secular political undertones and implications. Rather than demanding rights, I would like to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us so that we treat others with dignity, compassion, and love, no matter how different from us they are. Of course, I’m hoping for this idyllic transformation as a light-skinned person who has led a relatively privileged life. A woman of darker pigment would doubtless view the pursuit of rights from a different perspective. So, “rights” language is something I’m still wrestling with, but I hope and work for the same outcomes as those who embrace the language of human and animal rights.
