The alarm clock went off like an audio bomb, jolting Jake awake in one disorienting second. While he fumbled for the snooze button, he reached for his gun. He’d shoot the bastard into oblivion. His hand came up empty. Damn gun was locked in the closet safe.

Blowing his alarm clock to smithereens wasn’t worth the paperwork anyway.

Finally, he just slapped his palm over several buttons at once and the blaring stopped.

The scent of fresh coffee reached his nostrils and he shot up in bed. For one brief moment, his sleep-addled brain thought he’d been burglarized and the criminal had brewed him a pot of coffee. Then Lia’s voice, an odd combination of smoky and aloof, drifted in from the other room, kicking up his pulse. Why was it the one woman who’d spent the night not in his bed sent his libido into overdrive?

Had to be the whole other side of the fence thing. He had always preferred his woman southern, petite, blond, and curvy. The angel was all dark lines and angles, and not even human. Not to add she had the charm of a rabid pit bull. So why did just hearing her voice pull his dick to attention?

Tossing the covers aside, he glanced down and cringed. Definitely got his lower half’s attention. He stood and stretched, wincing a little at the tightness in his muscles. Apparently, his body didn’t much care for time warps even if they were amazing as hell.

With a yawn, he rummaged through his bottom dresser drawer until he found his academy sweats. He yanked them on, adjusted his inconvenient boner so it wouldn’t be so damn obvious, and then made a beeline for the kitchen with plans to raid the coffee.

Once he hit the kitchen, it took his eyes all of zero seconds to home in on Lia. She was leaning forward, elbows resting on the countertop, one hip cocked to the side. And she was no longer decked out in the black warrior princess getup. No, it was much worse, Jake realized, as he took in her black, fitted tank top tucked into the most amazing pair of jeans he’d ever seen. If not for Joey and Ursus staring at him from the other side of the counter, he might have done something juvenile to her shapely backside.

Tearing his gaze from the object of his fascination, he caught Joey smirking under raised brows.

“What?” His hand scratched over his scar in a self-conscious gesture as he passed by her on his route to the coffee pot.

“Did we wake you?” she asked, handing him an empty mug.

“No. I set the alarm last night. Gotta work today.” He filled his cup and leaned against the counter, eyeing their blank expressions. “For Christ’s sake, what?” he demanded, then took a sip. And fought the urge to spit the bitter liquid back into the mug. Swiping his arm across his mouth, he said, “This is awful.”

“I know.” Joey gave him a sympathetic smile. “Ursus made it.”

“What? I thought you loved my coffee.
