Chapter Six

June 15, 2031

The two physicians came into the house mid-morning to have a conversation with their patient. Jennifer stayed, wanting to know what going on. She told herself that she had to keep her mouth shut throughout. Let her father make the decisions on the treatment plans. All she had to do was sound supportive.

Even though they had told Gerry about the nanolaser twice before, they made a point of spelling out the entire procedure in detail – the number of incisions, the locations where the tumor would be zapped and vaporized, and what sort of a result they were expecting. He agreed to it all without hesitation. The only question he had was regarding how much time would he be in the hospital. And how much time would he be unconscious. He was told that he’d be in the hospital for about four days.

He nodded then looked up at his daughter. “Tiger, I want you out of town those four days. Get a car and go up to the college and to Brookings. See your friends and band mates. This will be the last opportunity that you’ll have.”

“Daddy, I don’t want to leave your side. Why can’t I stay at the hospital and wait? I promise that I won’t get underfoot or annoy anyone.”

“That’s not the point, honey. I can’t bear the thought of you spending two to four days fretting about me. If you visit your friends, at least you’ll be distracted. I promise to not die while you’re gone.” He tried to laugh, and to get Jennifer to join him. She didn’t see the humor in it.

“You keep pushing me away, Dad. As if you’re ashamed or something. I came all this way to be with you. Not to go reminiscing in Brookings.”

“I’m trying to spare you, Tiger. Just like I did for Cassie. I’m not rejecting you. Or your love. It hurts me to see you suffer like this.”

“I’m not suffering, Dad.”

The expression on his face turned stern. “Never lie to me, honey. You never did in the past. Don’t start now. I can hear most of what you say to David each night. The Beast is killing you too. I want you to promise me that you’ll be out of town and on your way to somewhere before they open me up. Promise me Tiger. Look me in the eye and promise me.”

“Daddy!”

“Do it honey. Promise me. You’ve never broken a promise to me. You won’t start now. Now, say it. I have to hear you say it.”

Third Pillar and Second Pillar versus the First Pillar. Did the ancient Wakiran philosophers ever conceive of this type of scenario? Obedience and honor in opposition to duty. A duty to stay with her father. A requirement to obey him. A requirement to honor his wishes.

“Tiger?”

Hard choices. She remembered what he had said to her about Cassie being sent away. Both choices seem to be wrong. Which is why they are hard choices. “Yes sir. I’ll go away.
