The school in the village had said that Otto was welcome, but he didn’t want to go. He was older than the oldest students, considered himself almost grown up and already more educated. Every morning he waited for Sister Wallengren to finish with the Kristianstadsbladet newspaper so that he could follow global events with his own eyes. He wrote home as diligently as his dear parents desired.

Otto realized that his long, uneventful days in Tollarp were the height of luxury, the most enviable state of affairs. He’d left Vienna a capricious boy, used to doing his best, but also to getting his own way. The lonely nights, the children’s days at the orphanage, the feeling of not being in charge of his own life had made him grow. Pepi and Lisl had confidence in him. And as though they were resting their heavy heads on his fourteen-year-old shoulders, he understood that he was obliged to share for other reasons than merely his own pleasure. They needed him so they could weather the unease, the days thickening into night and fog.
