Rather than trying to estimate how much wire you’ll need—this is an imprecise endeavor—work from a large coil of wire.

44Begin by grasping the end of the wire with flat-nose or chain-nose pliers. Holding the coil of wire in your nondominant hand, use your dominant hand to curve it into a loose loop to start forming a ball of wire (Figure 10). Rather than waste wire and make the ball unnecessarily heavy, make the wrapped ball as loose as possible so the center is as hollow as possible (Figure 11). It may be easier to imagine that you’re wrapping the wire around a ball of air. Wrap the wire in different directions to form a sphere.
