Chapter Eight
Camille Knowles
I woke to a shrieking alarm.
I shot up, almost tumbling off the couch. My heart rate was so high, I thought it would shake holes through all of my veins.
âWhat the hell is going on?â I muttered.
I threw myself toward the door but changed my mind as I saw something billowing out of the corner of my eye. I ran over to the closest plateglass window, pressing my trembling hands against it. Angling my head down as far as I could, I saw smoke rising up the side of the tower.
It took me way too long to appreciate what was going on. Smoke meant fire. The building was on fire.
The alarm continued to shriek.
I took a step back from the couch then tumbled over the ottoman. I fell smack bang on my ass, my teeth shaking. Then I lurched up to my feet. I had to get out of the building.
I threw myself over to the door.
I placed a hand on it only to realize that a new force field had appeared over it.
I tried the handle. âLet me out,â I said as I banged my hand on it with my palm. âThe building is on fire.â
I didnât expect the door to answer. Come on, it was a door â but the electronic panel on the side of the wall beeped in a bored tone. âThis apartment will survive. It has sufficient magical spells in place to ensure not even the hottest inferno can breach it.â
âWhat?â My mouth slipped open, and my voice teetered high.
I slammed my palm down on the door again, then turned. My heart rate started to slow â only slightly. My brain wanted to deny what the door had said â my senses, however, couldnât. I had to remember what Bailey had pointed out, too. The core of this door had a continuous connection to Ashcroft Manor and all of its collective magic.
Maybe it really could withstand even the hottest infernos?
But maybe not every single person in this building would be as lucky.
Drawn to the sight of smoke streaming up the side of the building, I raced over to the windows again. Once more I stupidly tripped over the ottoman. I fell against the window, but I couldnât break through it. I really doubted anything could.
I got the angle just right. I could see down the side of the building. I watched a hand desperately groping out of a broken window below.
There was now so much smoke that I only just glimpsed it.
The entire tower was on fire. It was massive. I didnât know how many people lived here, but it had to be well over several hundred.
The alarm kept blaring until suddenly it cut out.
I doubted that meant that the fire had been dealt with. I saw flames bursting out of an apartment just beneath this one.
I shrieked and lurched back. Then I dragged myself forward, and it was in a replay of what Iâd done when Iâd run from the man with the glass dagger.
