The Drawing Together of the Vocal Cords and Phonation

It’s the action of the interarytenoid muscle drawing the vocal cords toward each other that allows for phonation. We also call this vocal cord adduction.

If this action is accompanied by vocal cord vibration, it allows for the transmission of a voiced sound (we say a sound is voiced when it comes with laryngeal vibration).

The action of this muscle is required for the production of vowels (although it is also possible to whisper vowels without full vocal cord adduction).
