From her tower window, Pauline waits out the evening rain that bashes the gutters, pounding the stones below. The sky, her beloved, endless Brie sky is a volatile creature, subject to fits of fury. But these rages always pass, so she waits, watching as the black wall of clouds rolls slowly eastward toward Provins. She waits for the calming light.

She has been traveling since she was born, from opera house to opera house, city to city, with her parents, then with her mother, with her husband. She needs to find some sort of permanence in her life.

Ivan has been wherever she needs him to be. If she goes with Louis to Berlin or London, he waits for her in Paris or at Courtavenel. Now, he is going back to Russia, cold, distant Russia, and for how long? They have talked endlessly about his going, if he should go, when he should go. But so long as he is here, at Courtavenel, she cannot really believe he is leaving. It’s too painful even to think of it. What will her life be once he’s gone? What was it before? She hopes she will find a way to content herself with dear, noble Louis. She will resign herself to performing her wifely duty, and he will be grateful for whatever affection she shows him. And that will have to be enough.

She turns away from the evening light and hurries down the curving stone staircase in search of her husband who will never leave.
