Chapter VIII
Towering resentment was an apt description of Darcyâs mood as he left the sitting-room sometime after Caroline Powel had quit it. How dare the woman attempt to take him to task for his behavior when she had all but ambushed him with Miss Elizabeth Bennetâs presence! And that after Darcy had made clear to her that he had no intention of elevating a country miss to become the next mistress of Pemberley, a position which was highly sought after among those of society.
The truth was that the woman would never fit into his life, and he would not make her miserable by subjecting her to a role for which she was wholly unsuited. In the confines of his own mind Darcy was willing to acknowledge a powerful attraction to the woman. She was playful and intelligent, confident and kind, and possession of many good attributes. But she had not been brought up to high society and she had never been taught how to behave, how to manage a house as great as Pemberley, not to mention Darcy house in town. It was in every way inconceivable.
When Darcy reached his room, he hurried his valet alongâWinters had been with him for many years and he understood when it was best to leave his master to his own devicesâand then flung himself into a chair near a cold fireplace, dressed in nothing but his nightshirt. It was a warm evening for late May and the fireplace had not been needed, though Darcy wished for it now. The tongues of dancing flames had always had a mesmerizing effect on Darcy, and at that moment he would prefer to have been able to lose all conscious thought while staring at the fire.
Darcy was far too enamored of Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and regardless her complete unsuitability, his fascination was weakening his resolve. If he stayed at Hollyfield, he was very much worried that he would lose himself in a pair of fine eyes and propose marriage to her. And if he did so, he would be going back on centuries of Darcy heritage and tradition. His duty was to marry the right sort of girl who would increase his holdings, bring him connections to higher levels of society, and increase the power and influence of the Darcy name. Darcy was well aware of the fact that he could easily aspire to marry the daughter of an earl as his father had done before him.
That is why Miss Bennet was so unsuitable, even though he had never met a woman who had interested him as much as she did. He could not and he would not do such a thing.
As Darcy sat on his chair, moodily glaring about the bedchamber, he was forced to remember the evening, and he had to confess, if only to himself, that Caroline had been correct about his behavior.
Though he had been angry at Caroline for what she had attempted to do, his attention had largely been fixed on Miss
