Andrew stared at the orange color of the sunset trailing across the sky, surprised that money, his one motivation for coming, suddenly didn’t seem to matter anymore. “So what happens now?”

She looked up at him, her expression unwavering and determined. “You take the train to Cape Town then sail across the ocean and tell my grandfather’s solicitors that my uncle is welcome to the money.”

“While you return with Kakoba and his family.”

She nodded. “I meant it when I said I don’t belong there, and I won’t go back and pretend to be something that I’m not. I have everything I need here.”

“So this isn’t really about Kakoba, is it? This is really about what is best for you.”

“Of course not. I’m staying because Kakoba and his family need me.”

He caught the frustration in her voice but wasn’t ready to let the conversation drop. “Did they ask, or did you insist on helping?”

“They need someone who is not only familiar with Kakoba’s people, but one who is respected by both of the chiefs.”

“Is that what you said to convince him that you needed to go with him?”

She started walking toward the house. “Does it matter?”

“I think you are staying because you’re afraid.”

“Afraid? Of what?”

“Of going back to a place where you don’t fit in. Of being out of your element in a world that is completely different from this one. You’re comfortable here because you grew up here and know these people, but that still doesn’t make you one of them.”

“You’re wrong.” She stopped and faced him. “And you know as well as I do that the timing isn’t right for me to leave. They need me here. And I need them.”

“Exactly. You need them. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but when are you going to stop hiding? Because it will never be the right time for you to return, will it?”

“I’m not hiding.” She held up her hand and started walking again, determination in every step. “And please don’t say anything else. I’m sure my grandfather’s solicitors will pay you the money you deserve for trying to get me to come. I’ll even write a letter telling them to pay you whatever is owed.”

Andrew closed his eyes for a moment, trying to sort through his turbulent thoughts. Maybe it was those intense eyes of hers or the intoxicating night air, but all he could think about at the moment was how Lizzie MacTavish, temper and all, was unlike anyone he’d ever met before. And how he wasn’t ready to walk away from her.

“Wait a minute.” He ran to catch up with her. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have questioned your motives. It’s none of my business. I was sent to bring you back to New York. It was a job, plain and simple, and I never should have let my emotions get involved.”

“No, you shouldn’t have.”

“But don’t question my motives either. This isn’t just about the money anymore.” He grasped her shoulder lightly and pulled her around so she was facing him.
