Andrew stared at the orange color of the sunset trailing across the sky, surprised that money, his one motivation for coming, suddenly didnât seem to matter anymore. âSo what happens now?â
She looked up at him, her expression unwavering and determined. âYou take the train to Cape Town then sail across the ocean and tell my grandfatherâs solicitors that my uncle is welcome to the money.â
âWhile you return with Kakoba and his family.â
She nodded. âI meant it when I said I donât belong there, and I wonât go back and pretend to be something that Iâm not. I have everything I need here.â
âSo this isnât really about Kakoba, is it? This is really about what is best for you.â
âOf course not. Iâm staying because Kakoba and his family need me.â
He caught the frustration in her voice but wasnât ready to let the conversation drop. âDid they ask, or did you insist on helping?â
âThey need someone who is not only familiar with Kakobaâs people, but one who is respected by both of the chiefs.â
âIs that what you said to convince him that you needed to go with him?â
She started walking toward the house. âDoes it matter?â
âI think you are staying because youâre afraid.â
âAfraid? Of what?â
âOf going back to a place where you donât fit in. Of being out of your element in a world that is completely different from this one. Youâre comfortable here because you grew up here and know these people, but that still doesnât make you one of them.â
âYouâre wrong.â She stopped and faced him. âAnd you know as well as I do that the timing isnât right for me to leave. They need me here. And I need them.â
âExactly. You need them. And thereâs nothing wrong with that, but when are you going to stop hiding? Because it will never be the right time for you to return, will it?â
âIâm not hiding.â She held up her hand and started walking again, determination in every step. âAnd please donât say anything else. Iâm sure my grandfatherâs solicitors will pay you the money you deserve for trying to get me to come. Iâll even write a letter telling them to pay you whatever is owed.â
Andrew closed his eyes for a moment, trying to sort through his turbulent thoughts. Maybe it was those intense eyes of hers or the intoxicating night air, but all he could think about at the moment was how Lizzie MacTavish, temper and all, was unlike anyone heâd ever met before. And how he wasnât ready to walk away from her.
âWait a minute.â He ran to catch up with her. âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have questioned your motives. Itâs none of my business. I was sent to bring you back to New York. It was a job, plain and simple, and I never should have let my emotions get involved.â
âNo, you shouldnât have.â
âBut donât question my motives either. This isnât just about the money anymore.â He grasped her shoulder lightly and pulled her around so she was facing him.
