It is important to have an agenda for discussing these logs with fellow students or teachers/tutors, otherwise a shapeless discussion without focus can take place. There are several ways of reflecting on what different observers have discovered about their teaching. These include the following possibilities:
Teachers take it in turn to talk about the purposes and content of some of their questions/explanations.
Members of the group try to see what points of substance they can learn from each otherâs strategies.
Look at any common features (e.g. use of vocabulary and language register when explaining to more and less able pupils, to see what seemed effective and ineffective).
Persuade some members of the group to video lessons when they are asking questions or explaining a new topic and discuss ways of improving what is done.
Ask an individual to explain a personal interest to the rest of the group (a favourite painting/piece of music, how to play backgammon, the joys of fell walking, running your own finances, a scientific principle, how a car engine works, making your own pasta). Then discuss how you would explain the same topic: (a) to a 6 year old, (b) to a 13 year old, (c) to an intelligent Martian.
Discuss personal views with other people on matters such as: (a) should you call only on children who put up their hand to answer, or sometimes address others, (b) what options are open to you when you donât know the answer (e.g. a child asks why some grains of sand float, even though most sink to the bottom of the water container), (c) how you might react when children answer incorrectly (Give them another chance? Ask someone else? Give them a clue?).
