Chapter Ten

The next morning Sydney felt better. The guilt had faded away after another pep talk from Gina last night. She had told Sydney to go enjoy the beautiful city of Victoria and not think so much. Her friend was confident everything would become clear to her soon. The good news was Sydney wouldn’t have to feel guilty about Gina being all alone on the cruise. Gina ended up having lunch with Leo yesterday and they really hit it off. Not a surprise. Sydney knew it wouldn’t take long for her to meet someone.

Sydney enjoyed Oscar’s company and had seen a vulnerable side to him she’d liked as well. Yes, his confidence was appealing but she also appreciated a man who showed his true self, his insecurities, his fears. Television news programs had built up this image of Oscar Martin almost as a super hero, a man who could do anything. A man who could push obstacles aside with his pinky finger and conquer the world. When you see things enough you start to believe them.

Sydney disembarked from the ship at eleven and waited for Oscar at their agreed location, alongside the water next to the tourism information booth. She had no idea what he had planned or the mysterious person she would meet, but she looked forward to a full day there.

Oscar approached with a grin on his face. “Good morning.” He eyed her white skirt and lavender blouse and then looked down at his own clothes. “This is interesting. What are the chances?”

Sydney held up her hand. “Don’t say it.”

“Fine, fine. I won’t say it.” He laughed. “But you know I’ll be thinking it, right?”

Sydney smacked him on the arm. “Believe me, I know.”

They matched perfectly. The man wore white pants and a lavender shirt.

Oscar pulled his smartphone from his pocket. “Hang on, this needs to be documented.”

“Our clothes?”

“Yes! This is not a coincidence.” He stretched his arm out in front of him with the phone for a selfie. “Smile and pretend you like me.”

“That won’t be difficult,” she mumbled.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

They both smiled and Oscar took the picture. “There! Let me make sure it turned out okay.” He tapped the picture on his phone and smiled. “Look at us…We look happy and harmonious.” He showed the picture to her.

Happy and harmonious. Good choice of words. And he was right—they looked good together. Like they were a couple.

“You approve?” he asked.

She nodded. “I approve.”

“Good, me too.” He gestured down the sidewalk to the right. “This way…”

They walked down Dallas Road along the shore of Juan de Fuca Strait.

“Oscar!” called out a male voice.

Oscar and Sydney turned around and watched as a man approached out of breath, his wife sheepishly trailing behind.

Oscar smiled. “Hello.”

“I thought that was you. What a pleasure it is to meet you!”

“Thank you. And your name is?”

“Oh! John Billman. I’m a big, big fan. I saw the work you did on that high speed jet. It’s brilliant. A one hour flight from Los Angeles to Paris would be out of this world.
