CHAPTER 6

By lunchtime, Hannah Lynne had made some headway in cleaning the countertops and cabinets, including the one under the sink. Fortunately she’d only found one more rodent, one that had been dead for a while. She quickly disposed of it, chuckling over Ezra’s assuming she’d be afraid of a harmless mouse. Well, not harmless, as they could do plenty of damage if not taken care of in a swift manner. They were also a health hazard. But vermin weren’t the only health hazard in this house.

She stood and arched her back. Sunbeams tried to penetrate the thick film of grease and dirt coating the window above the sink. She’d tackle that after lunch. Right now her stomach growled, and she went upstairs to wash her hands. At least that plumbing worked. She also refilled her bucket and then went downstairs to retrieve her sandwich and apple, setting the bucket on the floor.

As she pulled her wrapped sandwich out of the paper bag she’d put on one of the counters, Ezra walked into the kitchen. He’d been stomping around on the roof all morning. His shirt and pants were dirty, but his hands were clean. She noticed this as he put them on his trim waist and looked around the kitchen. There must be a working pump outside.

“Wow,” he said, nodding his approval. “You’ve done a lot in here.”

Hannah Lynne followed his gaze. She had worked all morning, but it suddenly seemed like she hadn’t accomplished as much as he was giving her credit for. There was too much work to do in a day. Or a week, or a month, even. “Not as much as I wanted,” she mumbled.

“I know what you mean.” He blew out a breath. “It’s going to take a long time to get this place livable.” Then he shrugged. “It’s all right, though. I’m not in any big hurry.”

Which probably meant he didn’t have a secret girlfriend in his life. If he did, he would want to get the house ready for the two of them as soon as possible. She started to smile, then realized that little tidbit of information didn’t matter. Even if he didn’t have someone now, someday he would find a girlfriend . . . and a wife. She was coming to understand it wouldn’t be her.

However, that didn’t mean she couldn’t enjoy his company, which she definitely did.

“I watered yer horse,” Ezra said as she unwrapped her sandwich.

She turned to him and smiled. “Danki.” Nice and thoughtful. He’s perfect. She stifled a sigh so she wouldn’t sound like a thirteen-year-old girl mooning over her latest crush—which was exactly what she was doing, minus the thirteen-year-old part.

“What’s his name?” he asked.

“George Washington Junior.”

His brow lifted. “Seriously?”

She nodded. “But we call him Junior.”

“Okay, I’ll bite.” He moved closer to her. “Why did you name him after a president?”

“When I was six mei mamm took me to the library. We would geh there all the time, and one February they had a display for President’s Day.
