“He was here?” Fitz asked, obviously as surprised as I was.

“Got in the house somehow and was waiting for me in my bedroom,” I told Fitz.

“Hmm.”

I looked over at Locke who had made the noise.

He’d come along for the ride with Fitz. Apparently, they’d been hanging out together. Not exactly sure how I felt about it either. There was no other way to say it. Locke unnerved me. It was like he was always seeing inside my head and knew every thought I had. No one wanted to feel that exposed.

Currently, he was studying one of the paintings on my bedroom wall.

“Is this an original Keith Haring?” Locke asked, squinting at the 80’s pop culture picture.

Fitz and I exchanged a glance. We didn’t have paintings in our homes that weren’t originals. The colorful cartoon picture, meant to be child-friendly, was worth over fifty-thousand dollars.

I hated it with a passion.

“Can we stay on topic here?” I said. “Heath. Back from wherever the hell he went missing.”

“Oh, I don’t think he was missing,” Locke said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Fitz asked. “He took off. Left his home, school. The cops couldn’t find him. That’s for sure. What’s that if not missing?”

“Missing implies lost,” Locke answered. “I don’t believe Heath was ever lost. In fact, I believe everything he’s done has been utterly intentional. Did you know that he was a year older than you both?”

“No,” I said. “He’s seventeen. He’ll be eighteen in, what? April, right?”

“April seventh,” Fitz said, filling in the date.

“No, he’ll be nineteen. He was left back a year in his schooling. I checked the records from Thornfield. Heath turned eighteen last April which means he’s a legal adult. He could do anything he chooses without any type of parental authorization. Including leaving school.”

Fitz’s expression was dark. “Why lie about that?”

“Why, indeed?” Locke asked. Then he turned away from the painting and his gaze landed hard on me. “What exactly did he tell you?”

I thought back to our non-conversation. “Nothing really. He just showed up, wouldn’t answer any of my questions. Oh, and he told me I’m next. Next for what, I have no idea.”

“There it is,” Locke muttered. “I was right.”

“Right about what?” Fitz asked as he stepped towards Locke, his voice now raised. “Stop fucking around with us, Locke, and tell us what you know. I don’t need some elaborate surprise reveal. We all know how that worked out for you last time.”

The last time Locke had staged a grand reveal he’d drenched his girlfriend with the sprinkler system at the Christmas Cotillion and almost lost her completely.

Lucky for him, Reen was pretty forgiving.

“Cruel, Fitz,” Locke said, clutching his chest. “I didn’t like how things ended with Moriarty. Two and two didn’t equal four and I can’t leave something that feels…unfinished. So I started to think.”

Locke started pacing in front of us, his index finger tapping on his chin as he began to muse out loud.

“What if everything that had happened with Reen and Moriarty was part
