Chapter Thirty-Two: Pulse

I’m so preoccupied trying to figure out how to reunite Holly and Jessica that I don’t notice George approaching me. Now, he’s looming over me, reaching for Holly. I take a step back, but all he has to do is reach a little further to grab Holly’s wrist. He frowns, gazing at his watch—he’s taking Holly’s pulse. About a minute passes as he shifts his fingers around on Holly’s wrist, evidently looking for her heartbeat. He tries the side of her neck, her other wrist. Finally, Holly sits up in my arms and turns to scowl at him.

“I see Jessie,” she informs him.

George takes a step back, his eyes wide, and looks between Holly and me. “She...she really doesn’t…” He trails off, then grabs a phone from the desk closest to him and dials. “Hello, this is Sergeant James. I need an ambulance at the police station. We have a three-year-old child without a pulse. Yes, thank you.” He hangs up.

“That’s not going to help.” I hesitate, but I can’t contain myself. “Your name is really George James?”

George ignores me, running a hand through his thinning hair, and turns in a quarter circle one way, then the other. He mutters something to himself. Then he walks back over to me and grabs Holly’s wrist again.

“It’s not going to be different,” I tell him. I take another step back, forcing him to let go of Holly, who grips me tight again. “Does she look like she needs an ambulance?”

“It doesn’t matter what she looks like,” George mumbles, casting his gaze all around as though searching for a report or instruction manual that will tell him what to do next. “She doesn’t have a pulse. She needs to go to the hospital. We need to confirm... We need a doctor to verify.”

I start to argue but think better of it. Maybe it will be easier to control the situation in the hospital. If I can get Jessica there, maybe she can talk to Holly without police hovering all around, asking questions and making demands. Now the question is how I can get Jessica to come meet us without her parents when she probably won’t trust anything I say. Maybe I could ask Jordan for help? Or someone else, a neutral party? Maddie might be able to convince her...or she might convince Jessica that our family is off our collective rocker.we both

George is conferring in a low voice with the other police officers. He keeps shaking his head, which I assume means he’s either unable to answer their questions or expressing disbelief. The others shoot us looks every now and then.

“Amy.” Toni has appeared at my elbow. Her mom and Maddie still wait by the front desk, watching us. “What’s going on?”

“They called an ambulance because Holly doesn’t have a pulse.”

“Really? What will the doctors even do?”

I shrug. “I guess it’s the best thing they can think of. Make her someone else’s problem. Though they probably still won’t leave us alone
