CHAPTER 10

The Beatties’ house was not far from Hannah’s house, and Hannah pointed it out when she and Lizzy were at the front fence of the horse paddock.

“Are you okay to walk that far, Hannah?” Lizzy asked sweetly.

“Jah. The midwife said it was good for me to do a little walking.”

They walked through the tall grass of the paddocks until they were at the Beattie’s property.

“Are they old?” Lizzy whispered.

“About in their fifties, I’d say. They have one grown up son and he’s moved away.”

Hannah walked up the stairs of the porch with Lizzy close behind her. The door opened before Hannah knocked.

Mrs. Beattie stood there smiling. "Hannah, I'm so pleased you've come. We were going to stop by and see you later today. We've got Joel coming back home to look after the farm."

"That's wonderful news. He’s moving back to live here?"

"Jah, but we’re giving him the haus and we’re moving into the grossdaddi haus." Mrs. Beattie's eyes traveled to Lizzy.

"I'm so sorry. Where are my manners? This is Lizzy. She's staying with me for a while—Lizzy Weaver."

"Nice to meet you, Lizzy."

"Nice to meet you too, Mrs. Beattie.”

“I’m Linda and my husband is Luke. Come in and meet him, Lizzy." They both walked into the house and the ladies all went into the living room where Luke was reading one of the Amish newspapers. He stood to greet them.

After Lizzy was introduced to Luke Beattie, he said, "Sit down, sit down. Both you young ladies should come for dinner tonight. Joel will be here by then."

"We'd love to," Lizzy said, speaking for both of them without thinking to ask Hannah first.

"Jah, denke. How is Joel?" Hannah asked.

Linda explained, "Coming back here will be good for him. He was about to get married and it was eight weeks before the wedding and the young woman just up and left the community."

Lizzy gasped. “That's terrible. The poor man. He must be devastated."

"He is. That's why he said a new start would do him good."

Lizzy nodded. "Jah, everyone needs a new start once in a while. My parents died a year ago and I miss them dreadfully."

"Oh, I'm sorry, Lizzy. I didn’t know,” Hannah said.

Lizzy looked across at her. “You didn’t ask me anything about my familye.”

Hannah hung her head while Luke and Linda offered Lizzy words of comfort.

After Lizzy thanked them for their kindness, she looked around. “Would you like some help around the place? I can see you've got boxes there, do you need them moved into the grossdaddi haus?"

"Oh, you're so kind, Lizzy. That would be lovely since Luke has a bad back and mine’s not too good either."

Lizzy sprang to her feet. "I don't mind at all."

Hannah stood up too.

"You sit down, Hannah. You can't do anything in your condition," Linda said.

Hannah sat back down knowing Linda must’ve heard about her pregnancy. "I can do some small things."

"Nonsense.”

"Jah, Linda and I will be just fine. Come along," Lizzy said. “You can show me where you’d like everything placed.”

When they left Mr.
