Travis picked her up from the haus and they went for a drive.

“What’s up, Emma? Why are you so upset?”

Emma felt better just to be in his company. “I don’t know if Isobel ever told you, but we never knew who our father was.”

“No, she didn’t discuss that with me.”

“Well, Mom wouldn’t tell me so I snooped around her room and found our birth certificates.”

“Go on.” Travis glanced at Emma every now and again while trying to keep his eyes on the road as well.

“It’s so horrible. It’s too horrible to even say.”

“Wait. I’ll stop the car.” Travis swerved the car over to the side of the road and turned to face her. “Now go on. Nothing can be that horrible. Just tell me.”

She took a deep breath, and continued, “When my mother was young, she lived with a family as a house maid and babysitter.” Emma paused for a moment. “When she found she was having twins, the employer said that she could only keep one baby, if she wanted to keep her job.”

“That’s horrible. Is that it?”

“I wish it were, but there’s more.”

Travis held her hand.

“It was the employer’s name on the birth certificate.”

Travis pulled a face. “Really?”

“Mom said that he forced her to have relations with him.”

Travis’ jaw dropped. “Emma, that’s rape. He should be charged and locked up.”

“It was so long ago, though.”

“Doesn’t matter, he can still be charged. Has Rose thought about pressing charges?”

Emma shook her head. “No, she wouldn’t; she feels shameful about the whole thing.”

“Does Isobel know?”

“No, you are the only person who knows. You and that horrible man – and that horrible man is my father.”

“No wonder you’re so upset.” They were silent for a while, then Travis said, “Are you going to tell Isobel?”

“I’ll have to at some stage I suppose.”

“I’ll go with you if you like. I can drive you down there.”

“Thanks, Travis. You’re really the only person in the world that I can rely on, but how do you think you’ll cope when you see Isobel again?”

Travis smiled and looked deep into her eyes. “I was over Isobel a long time ago.”

Emma understood what he meant; it would’ve come as a shock to him that Isobel had married so soon, to someone she hardly knew.

Travis continued, “But you know how I feel about you. I’ve come to be very, very fond of you.”

“Really?”

“I love you, Emma.” Travis laughed. “There, I’ve said it. I’ve put myself out on a ledge and revealed my true feelings.”

It warmed Emma’s heart to hear his words, but she was not sure that she loved him back. What was love? She knew she wanted to spend all her time with him, and she felt better when he was around, but was that love?

Emma stared into his eyes as he moved his mouth closer to hers. She did not move away when he placed his warm lips over hers. She breathed in his manly scent.

Travis quickly drew away. “Sorry about that, Emma. I don’t know what came over me.
