Luke heard Becca sigh before her breathing shallowed into what seemed like a light slumber. He hated the mistakes he had made, one after another. Inviting her to join him on his trip to Waterbend had been his first error, much as he liked having her with him. His second mistake had been to stop at the Institute. Having Hank on their tail compounded all their problems.

Luke peered at Becca’s closed eyes and sweet face. She was beautiful, but in a pure way that bespoke an inner serenity as well as an outer attractiveness that had gotten his attention the day they met. In a short period of time, he had realized what really made her so alluring—she was considerate of others and focused on their needs instead of her own.

He sat in a straight-back chair close to the stairwell and continued to glance through the large window and peer into the darkness outside. He cocked his ear and listened for any sounds that weren’t common to the night. Time passed slowly, but he remained vigilant, and after a few hours had gone by, he headed downstairs again and checked the doors to make certain they were locked. Glancing out the windows, he could see the wind blowing through the trees. Shadows played over the patio and garden area, giving him cause for concern. Hank could be hiding anywhere in the darkness.

With the first light of dawn, the click of high heels sounded from below as the owner headed to the registration desk and checked her computer.

A second woman wearing an apron over her slacks and sweater asked something about breakfast.

Luke backtracked to the chair where Becca slept. He touched her arm and called her name ever so quietly. She opened her eyes and started to straighten herself. He put his finger to his lips and then pointed to the first floor. She rubbed a hand over her cheeks and followed his gaze.

He glanced at his watch. “It’s almost time for breakfast to be served,” he whispered. “Use the back stairway to get to your room. Grab your things and meet me in the lobby.”

As Becca hurried to the rear stairway, Luke retrieved his backpack from his room and descended the grand stairway to the main lobby and sitting area.

“I hope you slept well last night,” the owner said when Luke approached the reception desk.

“The room was very accommodating, but we’re going to have to get on the road today and travel farther west to meet up with a friend.”

“I hope you’ll come back again.”

“I’m sure we will.”

Just then, Becca stepped into the main lobby area. “The room was lovely.” She handed the key to the woman behind the desk. “Thank you.”

“You folks are getting an early start. Can I fix you a to-go breakfast box?”

Luke held up his hand. “That’s not necessary.”

“At least grab a cup of coffee. The carafe and fixings are on a service cart near the dining room.”

He glanced at Becca. “Coffee sounds good.”

Together they filled large disposable cups with coffee.
