How Does Spiritual Abuse Contribute to Relationship Dependency?

We are Christian counselors, and many of the people we have worked with over the years have also been Christians or people of faith. These individuals have come to us for help and guidance, seeking a treatment environment in which faith is accepted and integrated into care. They have sought a place to express and strengthen their faith, understanding faith to be a valuable resource in recovery. Other people have come to a deeper understanding of and connection to their faith as a part of their journey toward healing and restoration. We know and have seen the power of spirituality in long-term recovery.

Sadly, we have also seen the power of spirituality gone wrong in the lives of those we’ve counseled. Instead of seeing God as a loving, merciful Father, some people have an image of God as a harsh, unfeeling tyrant. Instead of God’s words being a balm for the hurts and pains of this world, his words have been used as a biblical bludgeon. Instead of having a God who knows them by name and accepts them, these people have an image of a God who rejects them as flawed, damaged, and unlovable. We do not believe these devastatingly negative portraits of God are the truth. When these false portraits of a vengeful, unloving, condemning, distant, and disgusted super being are used, the result is a type of spiritual abuse. Spiritual abuse is a very real experience for some people who have been told that God condemns them. If you believe you are forever condemned, how can you find hope?
