Ariel’s heart swelled with relief a few hours later as Oliver walked into the B&B, a contented smile playing on his lips. She couldn’t help but feel a sense of curiosity bubbling within her, eager to know more about the brother she had just discovered.

“Hey, Oliver, how did it go with Charlie and the kids?” Ariel asked, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.

Oliver’s face lit up, radiating joy. “It was amazing, Ariel. Charlie and her kids are wonderful. We connected instantly, and it felt like we’ve known each other for a lifetime.”

Ariel’s curiosity grew stronger, and she leaned in closer, her voice laced with intrigue. “Any new insights on dad?”

Oliver’s expression faltered momentarily, a flicker of sadness crossing his features. “No, Ariel, nothing new. It seems our dad remains an enigma even to Charlie. It’s as if he vanished without a trace.”

Ariel’s heart sank, the weight of the unanswered questions still heavy upon her. She longed for closure, for any semblance of understanding regarding their father’s mysterious disappearance. But she knew that some mysteries might forever remain unsolved.

As she listened to Oliver’s words, her mind became a whirlwind of thoughts, anxieties, and mounting stress. Miles’s parents were due to arrive in the morning, and the weight of that impending meeting pressed heavily upon her. The mingling emotions of excitement, nervousness, and the remnants of her unresolved family issues and the visit from Jill’s ex danced in her mind, creating a chaotic symphony of emotions.

Taking a deep breath, Ariel tried to center herself, reminding herself that she had come so far, building a life and a sanctuary for others. She couldn’t allow the unknowns of her past to overshadow the present. She turned to Oliver, her voice filled with a mix of apprehension and determination.

“Oliver, I’m thrilled that things went well with Charlie and her kids. It means the world to me that you’ve connected with them.”

“You next,” he said, pointing at her. “Put away your measuring cups and come with me. Let’s go on a trip to town, have coffee.”

“Right now, I need to focus on Miles’s parents arriving in the morning. It’s important to make a good impression, to show them the love and care we put into this place. I have a whole menu to prep out.”

“Awww, come on. Spoilsport.”

Ariel’s heart pounded in her chest as she mustered the courage to have a difficult conversation with Oliver. She knew she had to address the issue head-on, even if it meant hurting him in the process. As they stood in the quiet corner of the kitchen, surrounded by pots and pans, she took a deep breath and met his gaze.

“Oliver, I need to talk to you about something,” Ariel began, her voice laced with a mixture of hesitation and concern. “Miles’s parents will be arriving soon, and I’ve decided it’s best if you’re not included in their visit.”

Oliver’s brows furrowed, a hint of hurt creeping into his eyes. “Not included? Why? Is it because they don’t know about me yet?”

Ariel’s heart sank at the pain evident in Oliver’s voice.
