Chapter Two

Gabriel

My heart was left pounding when Dylan and his fiancée left the shop. Holy shit, I thought. Holy shit. I had found him. But why in the world was he engaged—and to a woman, of all people?

I shook my head. Maybe he was bisexual—that was always possible. But still… The fact that he was engaged was a huge problem. A pang of anxiety rose in my chest. Was I going to have to wait years to be with my fated mate? Would they go through with the marriage and then get divorced, after which he would come to be with me? That sounded horrible.

I sat in the studio with my head in my hands. I had thought that leaving my old gang would cause fewer problems, not more. Now I was faced with the predicament of my life—my fated mate was already in a relationship with someone else.

All my life, the legend of the fated mates had been drilled into me. It was a sacred myth in my pack. All wolves had a fated mate with whom they were destined to live their life. It really did work out for a lot of people, enough so that as a kid, the many happy couples around me led credence to the myth. I ended up believing in it too, even when it seemed logically impossible. And like other beliefs, it helped keep me sane when I thought I’d never find anyone.

One of the things we learned was how to recognize our fated mate. The main sign would be a compulsion. We would feel drawn to them like they were a powerful magnet. I had never quite understood that until now—I had always assumed that the adults were being melodramatic. But it really was that powerful. Even now, my mind was racing, thinking of ways to get with Dylan.

When his fingers had brushed mine, and when we had shaken hands, I had felt a bolt of electricity pass through me. If that wasn’t a sign, I didn’t know what was. It was obvious to me—I just knew—that Dylan was my fated mate.

They just hadn’t taught us how to deal with complications regarding our fated mate, so I didn’t know what to do about this. I did at least know one thing that would make me feel better—hanging out with my friend Diana.

Diana was a shifter from my pack too, but we had been through some of the same shit together. When Diana and I were in high school, we had fallen in with a bad crowd, and we had stayed with them for years. It was only this past year that we had managed to escape them. Diana had found a stable job as an administrative assistant, and I had started my photography studio.

The worst part of those years had been that we were isolated from our pack. We had rejected them, in a way. Thankfully, they had welcomed us back with open arms, glad that we were safe again, but still, it had been a harrowing time.
