Gideon’s meeting wrapped up and he made his way through the nearly empty complex. He stepped into the elevator, only to have another figure move in beside him. He looked into the familiar eyes of Edgar. “Working late?” the other Alpha mused.

“You know how it can be.” Gideon wondered what Edgar was doing walking around the hallways at this time of night.

“I do know how it is. And so does Liv.” Shit. Gideon knew where this conversation was headed. “She is an ideal mate because she was raised by an Alpha. She understands the time commitment and her duty as an Alpha’s wife. Have you gotten to spend any time together?” So Liv hadn’t told Edgar about the incident with Dahlia in the penthouse. That was unusual.

“No. I’m afraid I’ve been preoccupied.” With my mate.

“Allow me to set up some time for you to get to know each other.” Edgar gave him a grin but the warmth didn’t spread to his eyes.

“Unfortunately I don’t think the match is going to work out. I’ve met someone. I never meant to insult your offer, but she’s my—”

“Think it over. I know you’ve found a distraction but think it over. For your sake. For her sake.” The elevator dinged and Edgar stepped out. “Goodnight, Alpha.”

Gideon watched him go as the elevator doors closed again. What a weird interaction.

He brushed it off and his anticipation grew throughout the short ride up to the penthouse. Dahlia’s sweet little body would be ready and waiting for him. He’d been fantasizing about the things he wanted to do to her all evening.

The moment the elevator doors opened Gideon’s wolf lurched to the surface. It was alerting him to danger nearby. He picked up his pace, closing the distance to the door in a few powerful strides. He could hear something now. “No! Please no! Gideon!” Dahlia’s terrified voice echoed through his ribs and slammed into his frantically beating heart.

He yanked on the door. The cold metal didn’t budge. He pulled again, and again. Something was actively fighting against him, forcing him to stay just outside the space where his mate cried out for him. Fuck this. He didn’t need a doorknob. Calling on his wolf for help, he worked toward a partial shift, allowing his knifelike claws to shoot dangerously forward. He plunged both hands through the center of the dark wood, punching straight through the door.

Shock rippled through him when he retracted his hands and found them filled with thorny green vines. Blood trickled down from his fingertips and dropped to the floor. Something was very wrong. He plunged his hands back in, tearing with his full strength until a hole appeared, then he dove through, landing in a roll on the floor beyond.

His mind reeled at the sight of his apartment. Thickly layered vines coated every inch around him. The green tendrils writhed as he moved deeper inside. He could see her now, curled up on one of the couches. She was asleep. Her small frame shook as she continued to cry out.
