Chapter Twenty-One
Fern
âEverything looks fine,â the doctor says after examining me. âAny chance you could be pregnant?â
I laugh hysterically. Wouldnât that be funny? Elliot McPhee, the man who doesnât want to have a family knocking me up. âNo. Iâm not active and the times I had sex we used protection.â
âThereâs alwaysââ
âIâm going to stop you right there. If I thought there was a remote possibility, I wouldâve done a test. My period was about three weeks ago. After the last time I had intercourse.â
She nods as if understanding that sheâs wrong. âSorry, I just need to ask all the pertinent questions to diagnose you. I never meant to offend you.â
A baby wouldnât offend me, but itâs the last thing I need. More so when the father wouldnât want anything to do with him or me.
âWeâll go with the motion sickness, but if you continueââ
âThis has happened to me since I was a child. Too many ear infections. At least, thatâs what my pediatrician told Mom.â
She bobs her head once, as if agreeing with that explanation. We leave the room, and when we come downstairs, I spot Elliot walking back and forth. He stops in the middle of the living room asking, âAre you okay?â
âSheâs fine. If this persists till Wednesday, you have to visit your doctor. I understand your hesitation about my questions but keep them in mind.â
I nod, hoping she doesnât say it out loud. Elliot walks her out of the house and when heâs back, he asks, âHow are you feeling?â
âWell, I told you, Iâm fine. You didnât have to call her.â
He shrugs. âSorry, I just needed to make sure.â
He doesnât look apologetic at all.
âItâs fair. Can you take me home?â
His phone rings, he lifts his finger as if saying one moment. âKyle?â
Whatever the person on the other side of the line says makes him smile but also gasp. âLet me make a few calls, okay? I promised Iâd be there, didnât I? Well, I wasnât expecting her to push him out early.â
âIs everything okay?â I ask as he starts gliding his fingers over his phone frantically.
âWould you mind coming with me? My sister is having a baby.â
Knowing that his nieces and nephews make him happy, I agree immediately. âTo the hospital? Sure.â
