CHAPTER NINETEEN

Kat paced the floor of the cottage, phone pressed against her ear as she wrenched her mic pack off the back of her shorts. Stupid, uncomfortable piece of equipment.

The phone rang and rang as she fished the cord snaking up her torso out of her top.

C’mon, Paige, pick up. If she didn’t, Kat would have to call England and wake up Allie in middle of the night. And angry pregnant women needed their sleep.

“Hey.” Paige didn’t bother to hide the surprise in her voice. “Is everything okay?”

“Do you have a few minutes?” Her cousin’s work day was always frantic but she’d answered. Maybe she’d managed to catch Paige in a break.

“Give me two secs.” Muffled murmurs followed, her cousin apparently unable to operate her mute function. The line cleared, and the sound of a door closing came through the phone. “Okay, I’m here. What’s up?”

“You were right.”

“I’m always glad to hear it but what exactly about?”

“I …” Kat tried to breathe. “This …” She couldn’t even get a sentence out, struggling against the boulder of emotion sitting squarely on her chest.

“Take your time.”

Kat dropped onto the couch, dropping her head into her hand.

“It’s okay. Just breathe. In. Out. Just focus on that. In. Out.”

Kat focused on her cousin’s voice. On following her instructions. Her world narrowing down to that one task. Getting air in and out of her lungs.

What had this show done to her? She didn’t panic. She didn’t need to be coached to perform the most basic bodily function. Even on her worst days she’d never experienced the churning anxiety that raced through her veins as she walked back to the cottage.

She sucked in a breath, then let it out. Another. Another. Finally, her chest started to loosen.

“Better?”

Kat nodded, then remembered her cousin couldn’t see her. “Yes. Thanks.”

“Can you tell me what happened?”

“You’re right. I’m never going to get over him here.” What had ever made her think this could be a good idea? Six weeks. Six weeks of kissing Caleb. Of pretending to be his girlfriend. She’d been on another planet to hope this could ever end up in anything other than heartbreak.

Paige was silent for a few seconds. “Do you think there’s a chance he might feel the same way?”

“Please don’t try and feed me hope, Paige. I don’t think I can bear it. He hasn’t said anything to indicate he regrets breaking up with me.”

“Don’t get me wrong. I don’t know why Caleb broke your heart, and I’m still pretty peeved about it, but whatever it is between you isn’t finished. It’s plastered across his face every time he looks at you on the show.”

“Maybe not, but it will be finished in two months. It has to be.” Even if the man could kiss in a way that made her forget all the reasons why she wasn’t meant for his life.

“Why? I don’t understand why.”

“Physical attraction isn’t the same as compatibility. We’re not compatible. I’ve been here less than twenty-four hours and that much is already clear.
