Chapter Ten

Quick stared at her as she slept. She looked so beautiful, and oddly at peace, like she had no cares in the world. Her hair fanned out across the pillow like a golden halo, and he couldn’t resist sifting a lock of it through his fingers. When he’d first woken up, she’d been securely tucked into his side as he held her close. Exactly where she’d spent the entire night, as though she belonged there. As though that’s where she was supposed to be. The thought made him smile. As far as he was concerned, that’s exactly where she was meant to be.

As he watched her, he couldn’t help but think back over their evening. The time they’d spent talking about their lives had been great fun, and also highly informative. He felt like he’d learned a lot about her last night, like how hard she’d worked to get to where she was in her career, and where all her determination came from. That drive to help other victims of abuse and violence. Going through what she had could have closed her off completely, but instead it made her want to help others. He admired that about her. Her past may have made her wary and suspicious of men, even afraid of them. But it also created a well of compassion in her heart, and Quick could see just how deep her beauty truly ran.

The chime of his cellphone sounded in the quiet hotel room, and Poppy stirred. He jumped up and crossed the room to retrieve it from the pocket of his pants. It was a text.

Tad:

Lunch?

Shel & I will be in

restaurant downstairs

1 hour

He looked up and met Poppy’s sleepy gaze, and he grinned to himself when he noticed the way her eyes drifted over his naked body. “You hungry? Tad and Shelby want to have lunch in the hotel’s restaurant in an hour.”

Poppy dragged her gaze from his thighs back up to his face as she felt her own face grow warm. “Um, sure. I could eat.”

Quick:

Poppy and I

will meet you there

He replaced the phone to the pants’ pocket and then made his way back to the bed. Poppy’s nervous smile greeted him as he slipped between the sheets, and she ran a hand through her hair and looked away. He leaned in and kissed her lips. “Good morning, beautiful angel.”

“Good morning, Quentin.” She shot a curious glance over at the clock. “So is this a typical musician’s morning? 11:10?”

Quick chuckled. “The morning after a gig, or hanging out at a musician friend’s gig. Yeah, pretty much. Usually later, truth be told.”

“Hmm.” Poppy nodded. “And what normally happens on the morning afters?”

“What do you mean?” Quick frowned at her.

“I mean with women.” Poppy bit her bottom lip as she watched his reaction closely. “Do you normally invite your after-show conquests to brunch in the mornings?”

Quick searched her eyes for a second. “Wow. That was a loaded question, baby.”

“I’m sorry, I ...” She hesitated a beat as she tried to swallow the awkwardness.
