When There’s Compulsive Gambling in the Family
There are many professionals who believe that addictive tendencies are inherited. A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that family members of compulsive gamblers are eight times more likely to develop pathological gambling in their lifetime than other people. That’s a higher rate than with many other psychiatric disorders.
Those people who know they have a gambling problem should be especially aware of what’s going on with their children. You know, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Tell your kids they share your genes and what that means to them. They should recognize their own warning signs and know that help is available. They need to be aware of themselves and understand that many children of gamblers often become addicted, too.
