Although the Spartans ruled for some time they began to abuse their power and the other city-states turned against them. In 371 BC Thebes conquered the Spartans. Thebes became the most important state for a while but when the conflicts began again the city-states became weakened and open to invasion. This state of affairs gave Phillip II of Macedonia the ideal opportunity to invade from the northeast and gain control of Greece.

Phillip II of Macedonia

When Phillip II of Macedonia became king of his country it was a very troubled time with his country weak and under continual attack from its neighbours. Phillip was known to make lots of changes within his country. He used his skills of diplomacy to make his country safe. One of the things he did was to make a treaty with Greece.

In 357 BC Phillip broke this treaty and conquered a number of Greek cities. He was able to use money from a goldmine Macedonia controlled to fund these attacks. Having gained control of Greece Phillip planned to attack the Persians but was killed before he was able to do this.
