CHAPTER 15

ALICIA

F ive days as friends with benefits. Five incredible days where normally her vibrators would have gotten used at least once a day and instead had not been touched. It was a new record.

Alicia sat on her dining room table the first night she had not eaten dinner with Gabo since the night of the pool terrace. A pile of documents sat on each side of her, and two screens showed spreadsheets that had her full attention. It was budget season, and that meant bringing work home.

The problem was her heart was not in it anymore. She kept getting sidetracked, looking at videos of travel experiences and adding places to her never ending list of locations she wanted to visit. The new twist was that she'd started picturing Gabo alongside her adventures. It was distracting to say the least.

Prostate cancer. He had an early onset of it, and then it had come back a few years later. She had found out the second time, in the most unexpected way. If she had not arrived a day early as a surprise to her parents, who knew if they would have ever told her?

The lull of years of cautious success of remission and then the last diagnosis, a different cancer now in attacking his lungs, his tobacco habit was coming to wreak havoc with his body, and with the last of her sanity and sense of wholeness.

“I ’m not part of this family, I always thought it was you and Daddy and me, but all along, it was just the two of you. Who else knows Mami? Who else was in on the secret?” The weight of the prescription bottle in her hand, incensed her further. She shook the bottle at her mother, who sat in the couch crying.

“Why
