Her skin was flushed that bright pink again. The drugs had made her happier, friendlier than usual. Or maybe it was the orgasm. Maybe both. But she was softer. Didn’t even protest when he clasped their hands together and pulled her out of the alleyway.

He was softer too, in the metaphorical sense. Wait, no. He was always this way, he just often faked it. He wondered if she faked it too.

He leaned down and picked up the abandoned paper bag of groceries, nestling it in between his arm and chest. Then he led her through the park. This time they walked into the dark night, the streets stretching out into blackness with happy, glowing lights lining the outer perimeter of the street. Their arms swinging gently between them. For the first time in a long time, Parker felt like he might feel…

Peace?

Wow, maybe he had really misinterpreted the effects of previous edibles. Maybe they simply took a little time to reach the right consistency. Maybe love was like that.

“What do you want to do when we get back to my room?” she asked. And he knew what she might be inferring.

“I don’t know.” He lifted her hand, kissing the back of it.

“What if we watch a movie?”

He smiled. This was the kind of time he wanted with her. Like partners. Like people who wanted to spend time together. “I could be amenable to that.”

“What if we watch another movie afterwards?”

“I might fall asleep. I’m pretty relaxed.”

“Me too. Are you spending the night?”

“Should I? Or should I sneak out at three a.m. like you do?”

She swung their connected hands back and forth. “I only do that because I have a relentless schedule. It costs a lot of money to stay this messed up so I gotta keep working. You can quote me on that.”

“Your friend John says you won’t settle down.”

“Yeah, well, John should mind his own damn business.”

“I think he cares about you.”

They reached the entrance to the Blackberry and walked in. They waited at the elevator doors, which seemed to take over an eternity to arrive. From inside the elevator, Parker watched the numbers click down up at a time in orange highlight.

When the doors cheerily dinged open, they stepped outside. He realized they’d been holding hands the entire time.

Parker Donne had walked through a park with Elliot Sheer, while holding hands.

He looked up into the mirror in the ceiling, a thing he couldn’t ever remember having done before, and there they stood like a bonded pair, connected at the hip. He reveled in it but only briefly, because the doors were already opening and she dropped his hand, the loss of her skin cooling his own as they made their way down a now liminal hallway.

“Do you remember my room number?” Elliot twirled around and then tossed a chip into the air, catching it into her mouth. Her hands went up like she just scored big.

“How would I know your room number?” It was 436, but for some reason he didn’t want to sound like he cared too much.
